About the Artist, Philip Hauser:

Philip Hauser has been a woodturner since 1987. His objective is to emphasize the natural beauty and the imperfections of whole pieces of wood. Mother Nature produces an infinite variety of interesting shapes, colors and contortions, and Philip’s goal is to work with the natural flow to create pleasing pieces of turned wood. He is committed to creating traditionally shaped pieces for everyday use as well as for decoration.

He likes to turn local woods including cherry, maple, black walnut, black locust, hickory, as well as some other less known species. In addition, some of his pieces use more exotic imports such as coolibah, red gum, eucalyptus and ebony to name a few. In the last few years he has discovered mesquite, a desert tree with excellent stability, colors and wood grain.

More about our partner, The Museum For Art in Wood:

Since its inception in 1986, the Museum for Art in Wood (formerly the Center for Art in Wood and  the Wood Turning Center, respectively) has been widely recognized by artists, collectors, scholars, and the public as a critical resource for the study of art, craft, and design in the material of wood.

Located in Old City Philadelphia, the Museum offers free admission to its changing exhibitions and access to its permanent collection, which now numbers some 1,200 objects and includes turned objects, sculpture, studio furniture, works on paper, video, and more.

Over the years, the Museum has supported and documented the developing field of woodturning as a tool for artistic expression as well as artisanal production.

The Museum’s focus is aimed at fostering appreciation for art, craft, and design in wood and at creating a space for the public to learn, enjoy, and be inspired.
